Ekipazh Flight Crew 2016 Review

a.k.a. in Search for Kanwoo island Airport somewhere along Aleutian islands
May 24 2021 Supplement : voted as the best movie to watch amid Covid-19 Pandemic
Russian Movie Week – Spoiler Warning from start

picture a righteous young pilot flying into a volcanic island, while it is erupting ! then while barely flying-out of this disaster tongue-in-cheek, the two escaping planes transfer civilian passengers up in-the-air by-way of rope !

East vs. West

while the West has enjoyed its trilogy of Airport sequels in 1970 1975 1977 and Concord 1979 even an Airplane 1980 comedy, the East had an airport disaster film Air Crew in 1979 and then inspired by this : Flight Crew in 2016. similarities between the latter two are that the early half deals with personal drama of its crew members including a romantic flower gesture plus more sex-appeal, to eventually land in a turbulent airport (though they’ve had their share of dangerous military airports) where the initial movie deals with earthquake while the second flies into a volcanic island almost over-run by melting lava, Jesus . so with all the similarities is over-all a re-make than sequel . and if you’re an airline-buff : the base Airport for the earlier 1979 movie is Charles-de-Gaulle serving Paris while Russia’s own Vnukovo, one-of-five serving Moscow is the back-drop for the more recent 2016 movie .

first-off : there are sneaky things quite different between developed democratic nations versus communist dictatorships even in the technologically advanced field of air transportation . such-as, a stocking two BMW SUV automobiles for a general’s daughter’s wedding, into a humanitarian flight shipping cargo for flood victims and toys for orphanages . then when the plane hits dangerous turbulence this righteous pilot ditches those very expensive cars . ofcourse the pilot gets kicked-out of the Air Force doing-so, then again gets into a young small commercial airline with a simple call by his father a prominent aircraft engineer now writing a book – later we find he wrote the technical manual for the very plane in the end . from here-on we’ll call this young pilot : trainee  (as he is some-what demoted) and his mentor the star pilot . sorry to note they BOTH get demoted in the end again and perhaps that is the Catch-22 of communist regimes, as you will pay which-ever way you choose to take .

how-ever as the movie enters the realm of science-fiction, democracy comes to-work on this communist airline management, crew and its citizen passengers as they have their say whether to accent such a dangerous mission AND vote to just escape or rescue further passengers from another earlier plane .

* * * SPOILER AHEAD * * *

where on their routine flight to Asia, their Flight 117 receive an emergency call to rescue elders and wounded from a (fictitious) volcanic island now experiencing earth-quake after-shocks about to erupt . far-off you see the night silhouette of a fantastic island reminiscent of a Godzilla movie . further on landing on its airport, built on the slopes of a mountain much like wide-bridges in exotic destinations, nerd-outfit researchers say anything can happen anytime and the volcano will erupt but not-know when . no further mention of miners seen still working atop the mountain on-arrival .

now finally into the small airport terminal we finally hear some English along with lovers’ French from stranded passengers – as this whole motion picture is in Russian although dubbed version has come-out . and for non-Russian speakers this is frustrating indeed as both voice over-dub AND captions are horribly broken, and this movie dumped as trash if-not for its post-half island airport scene and exodus suspense . all-the-while it is funny how airport attendees confide “don’t worry” and “stay calm” to fleeing passengers amongst all-this //

then on its climax as they escape the surrounding broiling lava is atuned to barely-escape scenes from The Wild Geese 1978, Flight of the Phoenix 2004 and movie title 2012 from 2009. this island portion is quite-well filmed in-par to Hollywood block-busters and is a must-see .

doubtful to note here what we can conclude about the island from conversations between pilots in the movie : people actually live here on the volcanic island as mineral miners and is a tourist destination ! and do all your internet-search might to look for similar geography among Aleutian islands, while you will be surprised to find Alaskan cities are small and you can catch sight of whales splashing among some !

* * * DANGER ! DANGER ! WILL ROBINSON * * *

while we are in numbers : a total of three aircraft escapes, or tries-to this deadly island in the end . First a commercial airliner which prematurely takes-off to crash into burning rubbles further-on on the run-way . second, the star-pilot the mentor chooses to take a cargo plane which was there . then third and lastly our pilot trainee flies the very passenger plane they arrived-on .

then ofcourse this non-Hollywood movie has to yonder into the realm of non-sense as the first cargo plane that left the island runs out-of fuel thus conjures-up this fantasy plan to move almost all its desperate passengers onto the second air-liner by a single rope ! – missions even daring for extreme covert operatives of SEAL-TEAM 6 . now this includes babies, girls and elders thump // lastly the Star mid-aged pilot does his solo circus acrobatics to re-located onto the second plane as the film ends duh .

number-wise : roughly a hundred-or-so who were seen boarding the first airliner (which on the runway) to take-off then explode in flames . then our star pilot put a whopping 200-mentioned on the first cargo plane and take-off in-tears unsure whether the latter might be alive and able to depart . after-which 30-mentioned people on the stranded-bus – Thank God and its producers to save them from melting lava – and later onto the second (incoming) passenger airliner plane . then the cargo plane had 20-mentioned minutes of fuel left to transfer 200 people onto the original airliner with 30 passengers, three times by a netted trolley which visually seem to take-in 20 maximum, except the last two pilots who this the climbed-down the rope . now does that seem even remotely possible ? not-to-mention the human cart hung onto the rope, which was finally attached through the lower cargo door of the hind airliner, so the cart will be far lower than the cargo door through which the people contained had to be lifted-up through the cargo door of the hind airliner – overtly far-fetched .

and now Korea Expat BLog re-collects Kanwoo island Airport Gallery in retrospect
